Best of Show – 2010 Las Colcheras Quilt Show, Las Cruces, New Mexico

This was my first paper pieced project, and I am very happy the way it turned out. Particularly since the quilt won “Best of Show” in Kenora, Ontario, and “Best of Show” in Las Cruces, New Mexico.
The quilting is very detailed and executed perfectly by Linda Clark. She chose the quilting stitches brilliantly and, for sure, they contributed to the quilt’s success with the judges.

ORANGE SHERBERT WITH OTHER FLAVORS

2014
Size: 88″ Wide x 96″ High
Pattern by: Stitchers Garden Block of the Month
Quilted by: Linda Clark www.borntoquilt.ca

1st Place – 2014 Las Colcheras Quilt Show, Las Cruces, New Mexico
1st Place – 2014 Annual Quilt Show of the Lake of the Woods Quilters Guild, Kenora Ontario, Canada.

The Bernina Shop in Las Cruces, Be Sew Creative, offered Stitchers Garden the block of the month class that taught me to design with decorative stitches using the different sewing machine presser feet. Marsha Trueax taught the class, and I enjoyed the creativity each square offered. My choice of all the warm colors inspired my classmates to refer to it as an orange sherbet, and the other colors make up the other flavors.

This is one of my favorite quilts. I love the color combination and all the embellishments.

1st Place – 2018 Annual Quilt Show of the Lake of the Woods Quilters Guild, Kenora Ontario, Canada.

It’s astonishing how different each judge perceives a quilt. In Canada, this quilt was awarded the 1st Prize and the judge loved the color combination and meticulous execution. I submitted this quilt to the 2020 Las Colcheras Quilt Show, Las Cruces, New Mexico, and the judge barely glanced at it.
I am glad that the quilt gained recognition in one of the shows.

ALGARVE

2016
Size: 77″ Wide x 97″ High
Pattern from the book One-Block Wonder by Maxine Rosenthal
Quilted by: Elaine Doornbos

1st Place – Large Quilts – 2016 Las Colcheras Quilt Show, Las Cruces, New Mexico
2nd Place – 2016 Annual Quilt Show of the Lake of the Woods Quilters Guild, Kenora Ontario, Canada

The quilt uses one of my favorite fabrics, by Rober Kaufman, which works flawlessly in this One-block Wonder pattern.
The title of this quilt was inspired by vegetation I saw in Portugal during our anniversary trip in 2011. We visited Algarve and the “end of the world” in the spring when all the flowers were in bloom. It was like a carpet of colors, shapes, and sizes, and this quilt depicts this so well.

Pattern by: Indian Summer by Judy Niemeyer www.quiltworx.com
Quilted by: Linda Clark www.borntoquilt.ca

1st Place – 2015 Annual Quilt Show of the Lake of the Woods Quilters Guild, Kenora Ontario, Canada

Indian Summer is one of my favorite quilts. I love the boldness of all the colors and the batik fabric patterns. Practically every block uses a different fabric, so you can imagine how much fun I had shopping for this quilt.

The quilt is lined with a double batting one out of wool and the other is an 80% cotton 20% polyester blend.

The back of this quilt shows the Ohio Star.

NANCY’S DAISY

2013
Size: 31″ Wide x 31″ High
Pattern is based on a photograph by Nancy Bergman
Quilted by: Janice Almli Newman

1st Place – Art Quilts – 2014 Las Colcheras Quilt Show, Las Cruces, New Mexico

I took this wonderful class by Nancy Bergman in Canada that inspired me to make this quilt. I apply a Raw Edge Appliqué technique and in the center of the flower, I applied the trapunto technique and beading. To accentuate the flower I drew leaves from nature and applied them into the design. Most importantly, I am very pleased with the selection of fabrics in the flower petals.

SUNNY DAYS

2019
Size: 70″ Wide x 90″ High
Pattern by: Sunflower Illusions by Judy Niemeyer www.quiltworx.com
Quilted by: Elaine Doornbos

3rd Place – Large Quilts – 2020 Las Colcheras Quilt Show, Las Cruces, New Mexico

This quilt was made using the paper piecing technique and a pattern by Judy Niemeyer called Sunflower Illusions. When I started designing the quilt I planned to make it larger, and so I began making a number of the “sunflowers” in orange-red colorways. My personal consultant, my husband Dave, and I spent hours laying the suns out. The layout we came up required additional suns which I made in yellow to brighten the composition. The vibrant colors harmonize against the deep-hued background. I am very pleased with how it turned out.
During the Quilt Show in Las Cruces, everyone made a different association with what they see. Some read SOS and others see $$$. How about you?

In the winter we live in Las Cruces New Mexico. The arid landscape comes to life in the spring when all the cacti come to bloom. I am happy how the Raw Edge Appliqué technique works on the black background. When I saw this pattern, I wanted to try it, but I wanted to interpret it in vibrant colors. While working on the quilt, I wanted to add elements that will make it come to life, and that is where the flying butterflies came in.

EVENING SPLENDOR

2005
Size: 12″ Wide x 15″ High
Pattern: Inspired by a woodblock print by Walter J. Phillips, Flying Island, 1922.
Quilted by: Janice Almli Newman

2nd Place – Art Quilts – 2006 Las Colcheras Quilt Show, Las Cruces, New Mexico

Every summer we spend precious time at the Lake of the Woods in Ontario, Canada. The lake and the surrounding nature has been an inspiration for many artists. Walter J. Phillips produced multiple woodblock prints of the 14,000 islands that make this lake so characteristic. I love his work, and therefore I chose to use it as an inspiration for this quilt. This Art Quilt is my first and where I use Raw Edge Appliqué with hand-dyed fabric that I painted to accentuate various details.
